How to get my Papillon to sleep through the night

My Papillon does not seem to be able to sleep through the night. We crate it in the kitchen, but he whines throughout the night and gets very agitated. We are considering bringing the crate to our bedroom at night to get him through and feel like he's got company, but will this be a hard habit to break?
